Lines That Organize the Lot

Line striping turns a paved area into a working parking lot. Paint marks the stalls, the travel direction, the pedestrian paths and the accessible spaces, and it controls where people park and how they move. Faded paint makes a lot look neglected and leads to crooked parking and confused traffic. For Wichita businesses, restriping is also when accessible parking requirements come into play.

Restriping and the ADA

The U.S. Department of Justice's guidance on restriping says that a business or government that restripes a lot must provide accessible parking as required by the 2010 ADA Standards. The minimum depends on the total number of spaces in each lot:

  • 1 to 25 spaces: 1 accessible
  • 26 to 50 spaces: 2 accessible
  • 51 to 75 spaces: 3 accessible
  • 76 to 100 spaces: 4 accessible
  • 101 to 150 spaces: 5 accessible

At least one accessible space must be van-accessible, and one of every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible overall.

Sizes and layout

Under the 2010 Standards, an accessible car space is at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle beside it. A van space is either 132 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle or 96 inches wide with a 96-inch aisle. Access aisles must be marked, run the full length of the space, and be level with it, with slopes no steeper than 1:48. Accessible spaces belong on the shortest accessible route to an accessible entrance. We measure and mark these before painting.

Signs

Each accessible space needs a sign with the International Symbol of Accessibility placed so the lower edge of the sign is 60 inches or more off the ground. Van spaces also need a "van accessible" sign, except at sites with four or fewer total spaces. Painted pavement symbols alone do not meet the sign requirement.

New layouts versus restriping

Restriping traces the existing layout. A new layout, after a repave or when a lot's use changes, starts from measurements: stall width and angle, aisle width, traffic direction and the accessible spaces. HomeGuide notes that a new layout costs more than restriping existing lines. After a sealcoat covers the old paint, the layout has to be re-established from measurements.

Paint and timing

Striping goes on dry pavement in mild weather. On new asphalt or fresh sealcoat, the surface needs to cure first. In Kansas, spring and fall are the most dependable windows, with summer work scheduled early in the day. For busy lots, we stripe in sections, after hours or on slower days.

Other markings

  • Directional arrows and stop bars
  • Crosswalks and loading zones
  • Fire lanes and curb painting
  • Stenciled words and stall numbers

We can also restripe warehouse floors, playground courts and private drives.

Line Striping Questions

What does it cost to restripe a lot?

In HomeGuide's national figures, a regular stall runs about $4 to $5 and an accessible stall $25 to $40; a lot of roughly 30 to 50 stalls comes to about $500 to $1,200, and most crews add a mobilization charge. We count your lot and give a written price.

How many accessible parking spaces does my lot need?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, 1 for 1 to 25 spaces, 2 for 26 to 50, 3 for 51 to 75, 4 for 76 to 100, rising from there. At least one must be van-accessible, and one of every six accessible spaces overall.

Do I have to update accessible parking when I restripe?

Yes. The Department of Justice's guidance says restriping requires providing accessible parking as the 2010 ADA Standards require.

When does a lot need fresh paint?

When the paint fades enough that stalls are hard to see, and every time the lot is sealcoated or repaved. Heavy traffic and snowplows wear lines faster.
