Pavement That Holds Up to Wichita Summers and Winters
As paving contractors in Wichita, this is our home turf, and the job here is shaped by two things: weather that swings hard in both directions and a city of roughly 401,000 people (Census estimate, July 2025) spread across about 162 square miles of land. Wichita averages 65 days a year at or above 90 degrees and still records freezing temperatures from late October to early April. Asphalt that softens under July sun and then contracts on a January night needs a solid base, proper compaction and steady upkeep, or it starts to crack, rut and pothole within a few seasons.
Two kinds of stress in one year
The National Weather Service office in Wichita puts the average at 12.4 days a year of 100 degrees or hotter, and 2011 set the record with 53 of them. On those afternoons a dark driveway runs much hotter than the air, and the binder in the asphalt softens. Heavy trucks, trailer tongues and parked equipment can leave dents and ruts in pavement that was laid too thin. Then winter turns the problem around. The typical last spring freeze in Wichita lands between April 5 and April 14, and the first fall freeze usually arrives between October 20 and November 4. Water that seeps into an open crack in fall freezes and expands, wedging the crack wider each time. That is why we put so much weight on crack sealing and sealcoating for Wichita customers: keeping water out is cheaper than rebuilding a base that has been soaked and heaved.
What is under the surface
The Kansas Geological Survey describes much of Sedgwick County as covered with loose clay, silt, sand and gravel, with the thickest of those deposits under the broad alluvial plain along the Arkansas River, which runs right through the middle of the city. Ground like that can be firm in one spot and soft in the next. Before we pave, we look at how the existing surface has failed. Alligator cracking or soft spots usually point to a weak or wet base, and paving over them only hides the problem for a year or two. In those areas we dig out, add and compact aggregate base, and grade so water drains off the slab instead of sitting at the edge.
What we do across Wichita
- Asphalt driveway paving: new installs, tear-out and replace, and gravel-to-asphalt conversions on larger lots at the city's edges
- Parking lot paving: new lots, overlays and partial reconstruction for shops, offices, churches and apartment complexes
- Sealcoating: a protective coat that slows oxidation from summer sun and helps shed water
- Asphalt repair and patching: potholes, sunken areas, utility cuts and broken edges
- Crack sealing: hot-applied sealant to keep fall rain out of cracks before the first freeze
- Line striping: stall lines, fire lanes, ADA spaces and directional arrows
Lots that serve an aviation city
Wichita earned the name "Air Capital of the World" in 1929, and the industry still drives traffic patterns here. Cessna's headquarters and main plant sit at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, a 3,248-acre field on the southwest side. The former Spirit AeroSystems plant, which builds fuselage sections and much of the structure of the Boeing 737, came back under Boeing in December 2025. McConnell Air Force Base occupies the southeast corner of the city. Around those employers are machine shops, parts suppliers, staffing offices, restaurants and apartment complexes whose lots carry shift-change traffic twice a day and delivery trucks in between. For lots like that we plan pavement thickness around the heaviest vehicle that will use them, not the average car, and we can schedule work in phases or on weekends so a business keeps its entrances open.
Driveways in older neighborhoods
Much of Wichita's housing has been around a long time. Beechwood, Oaklawn, Hilltop and Planeview in southeast Wichita were built as World War II housing for aircraft plant workers. Riverside, College Hill, Delano and Midtown also hold older homes. Narrow driveways, settled approaches and patchwork from decades of repairs are common in those areas. Sometimes a full replacement makes sense; sometimes a mill-and-overlay or targeted patching gets a sound driveway another decade. We will tell you which one your pavement actually needs.
Permits and the street right-of-way
Sedgwick County's Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) enforces the adopted county and City of Wichita building codes and runs an online portal for permits and inspections. Work that reaches into the public street, such as widening a curb cut or rebuilding the approach between the sidewalk and the curb, falls under the city's rules for the right-of-way. Requirements can change, so before any approach work we confirm what the city needs and build that into the schedule. Work that stays on your own lot, like resurfacing an existing driveway, is usually simpler.
Getting a written estimate
Call (316) 448-2179 or request an estimate online. We measure the area, look at drainage and the condition of the base, and give you a written quote that spells out thickness, base work and any repairs. Final pricing depends on square footage, how much excavation is needed and access for equipment.
Wichita Facts That Affect Your Pavement
- Hot summers. Wichita averages 65 days a year at or above 90 degrees and 12.4 days at or above 100 degrees (1991-2020 normals). The record is 53 days of 100-plus heat, set in 2011.
- A long freeze season. The NWS Wichita office lists the typical last spring freeze between April 5 and April 14 and the typical first fall freeze between October 20 and November 4, giving water in pavement cracks months of freeze-thaw cycles.
- Snow is light but real. Wichita averages about 12.7 inches of snow per season. The largest single storm on record dropped 15.0 inches, ending January 18, 1962, and plows and de-icing are hard on loose or broken asphalt.
- Loose surface soils. The Kansas Geological Survey notes that much of Sedgwick County is covered by unconsolidated clay, silt, sand and gravel, thickest beneath the Arkansas River's broad alluvial plain.
- Aviation employers. Eisenhower National Airport covers 3,248 acres and hosts Cessna's headquarters and main plant plus a Bombardier service center. McConnell Air Force Base sits about four miles southeast of downtown.
- Housing and ownership. About 58.9% of Wichita homes are owner-occupied, and the median value of an owner-occupied home is $190,800 (Census ACS, 2020-2024).

Wichita Questions
When is the best time of year to pave in Wichita?
Late spring through early fall. Hot mix asphalt needs warm ground and air to compact well, and Wichita's freeze season usually starts in late October. We try to finish new paving and sealcoating well before the first fall freeze, which typically lands between October 20 and November 4.
Why does my driveway get soft or rutted in July?
Asphalt binder softens in high heat, and Wichita averages more than 12 days a year at 100 degrees or hotter. Thin pavement, a weak base or heavy loads parked in one spot make it worse. A thicker section and a well-compacted base resist rutting far better than a thin overlay.
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Wichita?
It depends on the scope. Resurfacing within your own lot is usually straightforward, while work on the approach or curb cut in the public right-of-way involves the city. MABCD handles building permits and inspections through its online portal. We check the current requirements for your address before we schedule.
Can you pave our lot without shutting down our business?
Usually, yes. Many Wichita lots serve shift workers and delivery trucks, so we can split the work into sections, keep one entrance open, or schedule paving and striping for evenings or weekends.
